Slay the Spire 2: how to find the optimal deck size for any build

We break down the deck size sweet spot for each character archetype, from infinite loops to massive Claw stacks.

A 45-card deck in Slay the Spire 2 can dilute your best cards down to a one-in-nine draw chance, turning a potentially smooth run into a slog. That’s why deck size isn’t just a number—it’s the backbone of consistency.

Most runs aim for a 25–35 card sweet spot, but specific archetypes push that boundary to extremes, from razor-thin 5-card infinite loops to 120+ card exponential stacks.

In this guide we’ll cover the probability logic, the size ranges that work for each build philosophy, and the tools you need to trim or expand your deck for maximum efficiency.

The general rule of thumb

The general rule of thumb

For most standard runs, a compact deck of 25–35 cards is the safe, effective range. This size balances enough variety for diverse encounters with reasonable draw consistency.

In a 20-card deck, any specific card has a 25% chance to appear in your opening hand. But if you bloat the deck to 45 cards, that probability drops to roughly one in nine, making key combos highly unreliable.

Anything above 20 cards starts to lean heavily on luck unless you have substantial draw or filtering mechanics.

Compact and infinite builds (5–15 cards)

Compact and infinite builds (5–15 cards)

Highly specialized strategies demand minimal decks to cycle their engines every turn.

  • Body Slam (The Ironclad): Five to eight cards is ideal to guarantee Body Slam lands consistently and exhausts the rest.
  • Grand Finale (The Silent): An infinite loop that requires a short deck to empty the draw pile repeatedly—usually well below 10 cards.
  • Star Engine (The Regent): A 10–15 card foundation ensures you generate and cash out star payoffs with every cycle.
  • Forbidden Grimoire (The Necrobinder): This Ancient card can thin your deck to as few as four cards, activating an endless combo.

Exponential scaling builds (100+ cards)

Some cards reward quantity over quality, turning deck size into damage.

  • Perfected Strike: Gains damage for each Strike card you’ve drafted, so stacking as many Strikes as possible multiplies its output.
  • Crescent Spear: Scales with the number of star-cost cards, encouraging a massive pile.
  • Claw: Multiple copies build quickly, making a thick deck of Claws highly lethal.

The Clone enchantment from Ancient Pael the Melting Dragon doubles specific cards at Rest Sites, letting you push decks past 120 cards effortlessly.

Character nuances by default

Character nuances by default

Different characters have inherent mechanics that nudge their optimal sizes.

  • The Ironclad: Can run compact decks but also manages large ones via Exhaust—constantly refining on the fly.
  • The Silent: Starts with 12 cards and accesses the most high-volume card draw, so a slightly larger stack (still under 35–40) is fine.
  • The Defect: Power cards disappear once played, so a higher-than-average deck size isn’t a problem; the self-immolation (status) build thrives with a larger pool because it weaponizes statuses.
  • The Watcher: Her starter deck is exceptionally strong, making it easy to stay selective—Watcher decks naturally end up smaller.

Tools to hit your target size

Tools to hit your target size

You can’t just draft; you must actively manage your deck with removal and smart picks.

  • Merchant: Card removal starts at 75 Gold, increasing by 25 Gold per subsequent removal.
  • Meat Cleaver (Ancient Relic from Tanx): At Rest Sites, Cook to remove two cards and gain 9 Max HP.
  • Skipping rewards: Once your build’s identity is solid, skip card rewards 50%–75% of the time. An uncluttered deck is its own reward.
  • Replacement strategy: Replace every Strike with a better attack and every Defend with superior mitigation before deleting them entirely. Never remove defensive options before finding replacements—having basic Defends is better than having none.

Once your deck size feels locked in, the next step is tailoring synergies for each character. You can find full build breakdowns and pathing advice in our Slay the Spire 2 hub at Solo Jugadores.
