Learn the exact node order, when to skip it, and the best builds to pair with the Golden Compass.
Figuring out the optimal route through Act 2 of Slay the Spire 2 can cost you runs if you take a bad fork. The Golden Compass relic removes that stress by replacing the map with a single linear path packed with resources.
It’s not always the right pick, but when your deck needs guaranteed upgrades and relics to stabilize, this relic can carry you to the boss.
In this guide we’ll cover how to get it, the fixed node order, pros and cons, and which builds benefit most.
How to get the Golden Compass

You receive the Golden Compass as an Ancient blessing from the Ancient Tezcatara at the start of Act 2. It’s not a standard relic and cannot appear elsewhere.
It shares a restricted pool with Pumpkin Candle and Toy Box — Tezcatara will offer only one of these three. Seal of Gold also occupies this exclusive pool.
The fixed linear path

Taking the Golden Compass replaces the branching Act 2 map with a completely linear sequence that is two floors longer than normal.
Every Unknown node on this map is guaranteed to be an Event instead of a fight, shop, or chest. The exact node order never changes:
- Monster
- Unknown (Event)
- Monster
- Rest Site
- Monster
- Rest Site
- Unknown (Event)
- Treasure Room (Chest)
- Unknown (Event)
- Treasure Room (Chest)
- Unknown (Event)
- Merchant (Shop)
- Elite
- Rest Site
- Elite
- Rest Site
- Boss Encounter
This predictability lets you plan all smithing, healing, and purchases from the first floor.
Why the Golden Compass is a strong pick

The relic delivers a high density of beneficial nodes with zero pathing risk. You get four Rest Sites, two Treasure Rooms (free relics), one Merchant, and several events — all guaranteed.
The four Rest Sites make it easy to Smith key upgrades or heal repeatedly. The two chests essentially act as two extra relics, boosting your deck consistency without relying on random drops.
Rest Sites appear immediately after both Elite encounters at the end of the Act. That means you can fight the Elites and still enter the boss fight at full health or with freshly upgraded cards.
Downsides and when to skip it

The forced linear path eliminates flexibility entirely. If your deck struggles, you cannot dodge the two Elites at the end — every node must be taken.
You’re also giving up other powerful Tezcatara offerings like Toy Box, Yummy Cookie, Nutritious Soup, or Storybook. If your build needs a different type of advantage, the opportunity cost can hurt.
The Golden Compass has a specific anti-synergy with Sword of Stone, which requires defeating seven Elites to transform into Sword of Jade. The fixed map only gives you two, making that quest impossible to complete before the Act 2 boss.
Since Unknown nodes are always Events, you cannot high-roll extra shops or chests even with excess gold.
Best builds for Golden Compass

This relic shines when your deck has a clear identity but lacks raw power or upgrades to survive Act 3. It stabilizes mid-game runs by guaranteeing relics and smithing without any routing mistakes.
If your deck is already dominant or needs a high volume of elite kills for scaling, the standard branching map is usually better. Pick the Golden Compass when you need a safe, resource-dense path to the boss rather than a high-risk, high-reward one.
The Golden Compass is just one of several Ancient relics that reshape your run; pairing the right one with your deck starts with knowing what Tezcatara offers at the end of Act 1.
