We show you the exact unlock chain and the fastest method to add The Defect to your roster without a single victory.
Slay the Spire 2 ships with five playable characters, but the fifth—The Defect, a sentient construct that wields elemental Orbs—is locked behind a chain of runs.
You don’t need a single victory. Any completed run, even a fast death or a menu surrender, moves the chain forward.
In this guide we’ll cover the exact unlock sequence, the fastest method to get The Defect, and the Timeline system tracking your progress.
The character unlock chain

Characters unlock in a strict linear order. Finish a run with one—win or lose—to make the next available.
- The Ironclad: Available from the start.
- The Silent: Complete a run with The Ironclad.
- The Regent: Complete a run with The Silent.
- The Necrobinder: Complete a run with The Regent.
- The Defect: Complete a run with The Necrobinder.
What counts as a completed run

A common misconception is that you need to beat the Act 3 Boss. The unlock system only cares that a run ends, not how.
Any of these actions triggers the next character:
- Give Up: Press Esc, choose Give Up. That run counts.
- Fast Death: Start a run, skip all turns in the first combat, and die.
- Full Run: Win or lose naturally—both unlock the next hero.
The Timeline meta-progression

Every unlock is a Timeline chapter that adds a bit of narrative flavor. They appear in a fixed order tied to the character chain.
- Fog Rolls In (Chapter 6): Unlocks The Silent after an Ironclad run.
- Anomalous Planet (Chapter 2): Unlocks The Regent after a Silent run.
- Life and Death (Chapter 6): Unlocks The Necrobinder after a Regent run.
- Booting Up (Chapter 5): Unlocks The Defect after a Necrobinder run.
The fastest unlock method

You can unlock the entire roster in minutes without fighting a single battle.
Start with The Ironclad, immediately give up. Then start a Silent run, give up. Repeat for The Regent and The Necrobinder. After giving up as The Necrobinder, The Defect is yours—no wins required.
Once you have the full roster, the real climb begins. Our Slay the Spire 2 hub over at Solo Jugadores has dedicated guides for every character’s best builds, relics, and strategies.
