Subnautica 2: how to unlock the habitat builder

Find both habitat builder fragments, craft the tool, and start building your Subnautica 2 base with our no-fluff guide.

Your Lifepod’s Fabricator in Subnautica 2 is barely functional—enough for basic survival tools, but useless for building a permanent base. That’s where the Habitat Builder comes in.

Unlocking this tool is the first step toward constructing Rooms, power systems, and interior modules. You need to find and scan two broken Habitat Builder fragments.

In this guide we’ll cover where to find both fragments, the full crafting recipe, and how to use the builder for efficient base construction.

How to unlock the Habitat Builder blueprint

How to unlock the Habitat Builder blueprint

To unlock the blueprint, scan two broken Habitat Builder fragments scattered near old colony facilities and mission points of interest. The fastest route uses a bearing of 20 degrees (north-northeast) from your Lifepod.

  • Near the Gene Donor: Travel roughly 160 meters to the Gene Donor structure, which grants the Digestion Buff. The first broken fragment lies at its foot.
  • Cliffside box: Continue to about 225 meters on the same bearing. Look for a base pinned against a cliff by an octopus-like creature. A metal box on the cliff edge near a broken platform holds the second fragment.

Alternative fragment locations also exist if you explore the surrounding area:

  • Welcome Center (100 meters southeast): One scan sits in a crate outside; the other is at the bottom of a hole in the center of the floor.
  • Anita’s Blackbox (about 150 meters north of the Lifepod).
  • Chap’s Blackbox cave (220 meters south): A machine inside a hidden living compartment yields a fragment.

Crafting recipe and required materials

Once both fragments are scanned, the blueprint appears in your Fabricator. The recipe calls for:

  • 2x Raw Titanium Ore: Gunmetal gray geometric rocks on sandy dunes.
  • 1x Glass: Craft from 2x Quartz, found inside and around large red spherical Coral structures.
  • 1x Basic Battery: Made from 2x Copper Ore and 1x Acidic Raion Pouch. Copper Ore appears in caves and under rocky arches. Acidic Raion Pouches drop from pink plants inside caves; peel their outer casings with the Survival Multitool.
  • 1x Copper Wire: Crafted from 2x Copper Ore.

The tool has three modes: Build to place items, Deconstruct to tear down furniture or Rooms, and Shrink to resize hallways and rooms.

Most modules need power. Place Solar Panels (1x Titanium, 2x Quartz) on top of your base to supply initial electricity.

When building, the tool automatically pulls materials from your Inventory or nearby Storage Lockers. To expand beyond basic tubes and hatches, explore abandoned bases and colony ruins to scan blueprints for Rooms, Biobeds, Processors, and furniture.

For example, the Room blueprint comes from scanning a Processor at the Old Habitat (400 meters north) or finding a Room recipe data card.

If you want a fresh start, use the Refund Base option in the System Menu while near your structure. It returns all spent materials to your inventory or a spawned Beacon cache.

The Habitat Builder is only the beginning—once you have it, Scanner Rooms, Vehicle Bays, and full Research Stations open up. For the complete blueprint list and expansion strategies in Subnautica 2, head over to Solo Jugadores.
