Subnautica 2: how to survive Leviathan encounters without wasting ammo

We cover the Collector Leviathan, the Great Jaw, the essential Biomods, and a checklist for staying alive in Proteus.

Many players step into Subnautica 2 expecting to take down the colossal Leviathans that patrol Proteus. The truth is blunt: Leviathan-class organisms cannot be killed. Only the Viral Parasite is vulnerable to a direct kill with the Sonic Resonator.

Your survival hinges on evasion, distraction, and a handful of Biomods that turn a lethal encounter into a manageable escape. Charging in with weapons only wastes resources.

In this guide we’ll cover both the Collector Leviathan and the Great Jaw, the tools that keep them off you, and a checklist for every encounter.

Why you can’t kill Leviathans in Subnautica 2

Why you can’t kill Leviathans in Subnautica 2

Leviathans are not designed to be slain. The only hostile creature a pioneer can kill outright is the Viral Parasite, which requires a shot from the Sonic Resonator. Every larger predator must be managed through silence, terrain, and specific Biomods.

The Collector Leviathan and the stationary Great Jaw do not take damage from any weapon in the current build. You either outsmart them or you reload a save.

The Collector Leviathan

The Collector Leviathan

This massive squid-like beast hunts the upper ocean and patrols the chasm between the first and second regions. It can shred a Tadpole submarine in a few hits, and a pioneer caught outside the vehicle suffers an instant kill.

Detection is brutal: it uses sonic pulses to track prey even without line of sight. It does not react to the Sonic Resonator or Electric Discharge, so combat tools are useless.

Distraction Flares can momentarily pull its attention, but the effect is inconsistent. Once you see those pulses, your only reliable survival tactics are to stay near the seafloor around 250 meters, hide under rock formations, and freeze with the Camouflage Biomod if you have it.

The Great Jaw

The Great Jaw

The Great Jaw is a stationary clam Leviathan in the shallow starting region, 300 meters south of the Lifepod at 50 to 90 meters depth. It never swims, but the threat is no less deadly.

Inside its mouth is a circular structure covered in bright pink strings. Brushing against them triggers the trap — the jaw slams shut, and if you don’t escape immediately, poison finishes you. The only safe approach is to never touch those threads.

Essential evasion tools and biomods

Essential evasion tools and biomods

The following Biomods and items are your best defense against Leviathans.

  • Distraction Flares: toss one when spotted by the Collector Leviathan to buy a few seconds of escape time.
  • Camouflage Biomod: unlocked by scanning a Bullethead with the Bioscanner. Hold perfectly still to de-aggro the predator and complete scans safely.
  • Dash Biomod: a well-timed dash lets you dodge linear attacks and create distance so the creature loses interest.
  • Upgraded Sonic Resonator: while it can’t hurt a Leviathan, upgraded shots deter most other wildlife from closing in.
  • Tadpole submarine with Scout Chassis: improves dodging and strafing. Always cross the chasm inside the Tadpole — it can tank a few hits before breaking.

Leviathan encounter checklist

Leviathan encounter checklist

Keep these points in mind for every Leviathan encounter.

  • Do not waste ammo trying to kill the Collector Leviathan or Great Jaw.
  • Equip Camouflage and stay still when sonic pulses lock onto you.
  • Keep a stack of Distraction Flares in your hotbar for emergencies.
  • Avoid the pink strings inside the Great Jaw at all costs.
  • Use the Tadpole for chasm crossings and stay near the seafloor to break line of sight.

The two Leviathans are just one layer of Subnautica 2’s hostile ecosystem. Base building, crafting upgrades, and the deeper biomes all demand their own survival toolset — all covered in the Solo Jugadores hub for the game.
