Subnautica 2: how to unlock and craft the survival multitool

The Survival Knife is history — here’s how to get the Multitool, craft it, and use it to survive Proteus’s first hour.

The Survival Knife from the original is gone. In Subnautica 2, it’s been replaced by the Survival Multitool — your first and most important tool on planet Proteus. Without it, you can’t harvest Fibers, craft a Scanner, or even make Basic Fins.

Every run starts the same way: you wake up in the Lifepod with nothing. The Multitool changes that immediately.

In this guide we’ll cover how to unlock the blueprint, the crafting recipe, where to find Titanium, and the tool’s four main functions for early survival.

How to unlock the blueprint

How to unlock the blueprint

The Survival Multitool breaks from the usual Subnautica formula. You don’t need to scan fragments scattered around the ocean floor. The blueprint unlocks automatically the moment you gather the necessary crafting ingredients for the first time.

Pick up three pieces of Titanium, and the recipe appears in your Fabricator — no scanning, no wreck diving, no waiting.

Crafting recipe and where to find Titanium

You craft the Multitool at the Fabricator inside your Lifepod. The recipe is simple: 3x Titanium.

Titanium is abundant directly beneath your starting position. Look for geometric, gunmetal gray rocks resting on the sandy dunes around the Lifepod. Larger clusters break apart into two or three pieces each, so a single cluster can give you the full recipe.

Don’t bother searching far. The dunes right under your Lifepod have everything you need.

Primary functions and usage

Primary functions and usage

The Multitool handles four critical tasks from minute one on Proteus:

  • Harvesting Fibrous Pulp: shred local plants to get pulp, which you then craft into Fiber and Basic Fins.
  • Processing Acidic Raion Pouches: peel the three outer casings off pink plants found in caves — including the one beneath the Lifepod — to obtain pouches needed for a Basic Battery.
  • Environmental clearing: break down large plants, coral, and small debris clusters faster than using your bare hands.
  • Self-defense: smack small threats like the Mango Nibbler to make them back off. It’s not a weapon, but it buys you space.

Strategic tips for early game

Strategic tips for early game

Craft the Multitool before anything else. You literally cannot gather materials for a Scanner or Basic Fins without it, so it’s your absolute first priority after splashdown.

Watch for Oxygen Tunics — large blue plants that spit out oxygen bubbles — when you’re harvesting in caves. They refill your air supply while you work, which matters a lot when you’re peeling those pink plants below the Lifepod.

Inventory fills up fast. Breaking down Titanium clusters and collecting Fibrous Pulp eats slots quickly. Grab a Portable Locker early or craft Wall Lockers once you build a base to stash the excess.

The Multitool opens up every crafting chain in the early game. Once you have it, the Scanner and upgraded fins for deeper biomes are your next steps — and we break down both of those progressions in the Subnautica 2 hub over at Solo Jugadores.
