Subnautica 2: how to find water slugs and craft water bottles

Learn where to harvest water slugs, craft water bottles and Isotonic Water, and which cooked meals double as hydration boosts.

The blue thirst meter in the corner of your HUD will kill you faster than any Leviathan on Proteus. In Subnautica 2, the endless ocean is undrinkable saltwater — every gulp drains your health.

Your survival hinges on Water Slugs, small bioluminescent sponges glowing bright blue and pink. They form the core of every hydration method available.

In this guide we’ll cover where to harvest them, how to process them into efficient water, and which cooked meals double as hydration boosts.

Where to find Water Slugs

Where to find Water Slugs

Water Slugs attach to the seafloor and rock formations, especially in the yellow anemone fields directly below the Lifepod. They spawn everywhere, but the densest patches sit just beneath your starting shelter.

Farm them at night. Their blue-and-pink glow cuts through the dark sand, making them far easier to spot than during the day.

You can eat a Water Slug raw in an emergency for +15 Water, but it drains -5 Food. Save raw slugs for processing instead.

Crafting water bottles and Isotonic Water

The Fabricator turns 1x Water Slug into a Water Bottle, which restores +40 Thirst with no downsides. This is your main hydration item for the first half of the game.

Later, unlock Isotonic Water from the Fabricator using 1x Flash Slug and 1x Salt. It provides +55 Water per bottle, a straight upgrade for long expeditions.

If you have excess Porous Fiber, use the Processor at your base. Three Porous Fiber produce one unit of water. This method is less efficient than slugs, but it dodges the food penalty when slugs are scarce.

Food items that restore water

Several cooked meals double as water sources. You need the Digestion Adaptation unlocked first — grab the Angel Comb located 150 meters North of the Lifepod to process local biology safely.

  • Cooked Bluemoon: crafted from a Bluemoon Fish — restores +25 Food and +5 Water.
  • Cherimoya Rotsac: found in shallower areas northwest of the Lifepod — grants +10 Food and +5 Water.
  • Pavlova: a high-tier meal from 1x Deepwing Egg Clump, 1x Sugar of Saturn, and 1x Cherimoya Rotsac — delivers +80 Food and +70 Water.

Isotonic Water also feeds into this system, though it’s a dedicated drink rather than food.

Survival tips for staying hydrated

Survival tips for staying hydrated

Enable all Landmark Signals from your character menu before leaving the Lifepod. It keeps you oriented toward your base while you hunt slugs.

Grab as many Water Slugs as you can in one trip and convert them all into Water Bottles before a long journey. Stockpiling beats chasing sips mid-exploration.

If you’re far from a Fabricator, raid storage containers at wreckage sites for emergency rations. Inside bases, the Biolab’s Oxygen Control biomod slows oxygen drain while stationary, giving you more time to scan for slugs.

Hydration is only one limb of the Proteus survival web — base power, oxygen, and deep food chains all pull on each other. Solo Jugadores maps out every blueprint and biome for Subnautica 2 so you never sink.
