Subnautica 2: complete early progression guide to the Bioscanner upgrade

We cover every critical step from powering the Biolab to crafting the Bioscanner, including how to avoid the Collector Leviathan.

After you clear the Digestion Angel Comb north of the Lifepod and set up your first base, Subnautica 2 opens up through Blackbox signals and new Adaptations. The next hours push you east into volcanic waters, a leviathan-patrolled chasm, and alien ruins.

In this guide we’ll cover the full progression path from the Welcome Center to the Research Outpost and Bioscanner upgrade, with every critical recipe and location.

Powering the Biolab and unlocking Biomods

Head to the Welcome Center, about 100 meters southeast of the Lifepod. Insert a Basic Battery into the Battery Power Outlet there. This powers the NOA unit and the Biolab.

Once the Biolab is online, you can install Active Biomods like Dash or Pathfinder. You also unlock Passive Biomods including Seaskimmer and Oxygen Control. Prioritize Dash for traversal.

Gaining Heat Tolerance in the Volcanic Region

Swim east-southeast roughly 250 meters from the Lifepod until you see fiery sparks and reddish-orange water. That’s the volcanic zone tied to Wander’s Blackbox.

Before you can cure the pink Angel Comb flower here, you need the Sonic Resonator. The recipe requires:

  • 2x Titanium Ingot
  • 2x Lead
  • 1x Basic Battery
  • 1x Wiring Kit

Clearing the flower grants the Heat Tolerance Adaptation. This lets you survive the warmer deep areas coming up.

Exploring Zip’s Blackbox and the Tadpole Pens

With Heat Tolerance active, go after Zip’s Blackbox. The signal sits inside a large cave roughly 550 meters southeast of the Lifepod. Bring extra oxygen.

The Tadpole Pens are about 300 meters east of your starting point. Search that area for Lithium deposits. You need Lithium to craft Plasteel Ingots and a better Air Tank for the next leg.

Crossing the Collector Leviathan’s Chasm

Once you finish investigating the Tadpole Pens, the Blackbox signals vanish. You now have to push east into uncharted territory. The Alien Ruins lie over 1,000 meters east of the Lifepod.

A massive squid-like creature, the Collector Leviathan, patrols the chasm between regions. It destroys a Tadpole submarine in just a few hits. Stay near the seafloor at around 250 meters deep and move between rock formations to avoid detection.

Axum Vision and deep-sea resources

Past the chasm, enter deeper waters further east to find the Angel Comb that rewards the Axum Vision Adaptation. This highlights creatures and capsules in darkness.

Follow that Angel Comb’s roots through a trench to the northeast. You will emerge into an open area packed with Silver, Celestine, and Conduit Crystals. Stockpile them now.

Upgrading to the Bioscanner at the Research Outpost

From the Alien Observatory, head northeast to reach the Research Outpost. To finish the current storyline, you must turn your standard Scanner into a Bioscanner.

Travel to the Alien Power Plant, then go south-southeast on bearing 150 degrees to Wreck 73. Inside, find the scan room at the end of a corridor accessed through a hole in the floor. The crafting recipe is:

  • 1x Scanner
  • 2x Enameled Glass (crafted from Creature Enamel and Quartz)
  • 3x Conduit Crystal

The Bioscanner unlocks scanning for alien fauna and is your final major tool in this early access segment. The rest of the critical upgrades and vehicle loadouts are mapped step by step in the Subnautica 2 hub on Solo Jugadores.
