Find the perfect spot for your first base in Subnautica 2, plus power tips and essential modules to build.
The Lifepod’s damaged Fabricator gets you through the first few hours of Subnautica 2, but eventually you need a proper base. A base sets your respawn point with the Biobed, unlocks vehicle construction, and removes the Lifepod’s crafting limitations.
Picking the right spot early saves hours of backtracking and ensures a steady power supply. In this guide we’ll cover the best locations for your first base, how to power it, and which modules to build first.
Prerequisites: unlocking the Habitat Builder and Room Blueprint
Before you can build anything, you need the Habitat Builder. Scan two fragments: the first is at the foot of the Gene Donor (roughly 160m from the Lifepod, bearing 20 degrees). The second is in a metal box on a cliff edge near an abandoned base (about 225m out in the same direction).
The builder itself requires 2x Raw Titanium Ore, 1x Glass, 1x Basic Battery (made from 2x Copper Ore and 1x Acidic Raion Pouch), and 1x Copper Wire. However, it doesn’t start with the Room blueprint.
You can get the Room recipe by scanning a broken Processor at the Old Habitat (350m North of the Lifepod), or by finding a data card in a colony ruin Southwest of the Lifepod. Follow the right-side crater wall past the colony wreckage.
Best locations for your starter base
Several areas offer good resources and power options.
- Coral Fields (Northeast of Lifepod): Flat terrain, high Copper/Titanium/Silver, water currents for Hydroelectric Turbines, and regular fish/Water Slug spawns.
- Old Habitat (300m North of Lifepod): Access to caves with abundant Copper, Silver, Titanium. Strong seafloor current for constant turbine power. Hostile fish patrol the surface but stay away from caves.
- Cicada Wreck / Lander Garage (400m Northeast of Lifepod): Highest Lead concentration in the starter area, plus Quartz and Copper. The story points Northeast, so placement saves travel time. Guarded by predators, so bring Distraction Flares.
- Crab Dunes (East of Welcome Center): Near Coral Crabs, fish, and Water Slugs. Overhang provides a surveyed view, and thermal vents to the East allow later expansion with Thermal Plants.
- Camp One (240m-250m Northeast of Lifepod): Reliable Silver Ore and Ore Clusters. Contains a Scanner Station Fragment. High Nibbler and Marrowbreather presence, so stay alert.
Power management and base design
Before placing modules, ensure at least one Room has enough vertical clearance. The Moonpool attaches to the floor, and if the Tadpole vehicle can’t fit underneath you’ll get an obstruction error.
Check the power display: the blue bar shows production, red bar consumption. Every module adds to the red bar—like the Processor (10 energy/sec) or the Scanner Station (10 energy/sec).
You have three main power options early on:
- Solar Panels (1x Titanium, 2x Quartz): effective near the surface, but output drops at night and below 200m.
- Hydroelectric Turbines (3x Titanium, 3x Copper, 3x Silver): must be placed in a current, provide constant 12 energy.
- Bioreactor (2x Titanium Ingot, 2x Copper Ingot): runs on organic matter; Biofuel Blocks are the most efficient fuel.
Essential base modules to build first
These modules are the most important for early progress.
- Fabricator: Removes Lifepod limitations, letting you craft Wiring Kits, System Chips, and First Aid Kits.
- Processor: Converts raw ores into Ingots (Titanium, Silver, Germanium). Required later for the Sonic Resonator.
- NoA unit: Needed to receive new main story objectives.
- Scanner Station: Tracks resources, Alterra Bases, Cicada Wrecks, and Anomalies within a 300m radius (600m sphere).
- Biobed: Sets your respawn point. Scanning the bed in a Colonist Bunker (220m Southeast of Lifepod) also expands your inventory slots.
- Moonpool and Vehicle Fabricator: Necessary to begin production of the Tadpole.
Once your first base is up and running, the next step is building the Tadpole for deep exploration and tackling the biomes further out. The full set of Subnautica 2 guides on Solo Jugadores covers every vehicle, resource, and base module you’ll need.
