Subnautica 2: how to craft Biofuel Blocks and power your base

We show you where to find Bioreactor fragments on Proteus and why Biofuel Blocks beat raw materials hands down.

Power is the heartbeat of any base in Subnautica 2, and running out means no oxygen, dead machines, and a very cold end. The Bioreactor turns organic matter into energy, but not all fuel is created equal.

The Biofuel Block is the standout — it burns slow, lasts ages, and keeps refill trips minimal. In this guide we’ll cover how to craft it, unlock the Bioreactor, and manage your power output efficiently.

Why Biofuel Blocks beat raw materials

Compared to tossing in raw Fibrous Pulp or Pent, Biofuel Blocks burn much slower. That means you refill the Bioreactor far less often. Raw organic matter gets consumed fast and forces constant scavenging.

Biofuel Blocks effectively triple your fuel efficiency per slot. If you need to stretch a limited stockpile of organic resources, this processed fuel is the only way to go.

Crafting Biofuel Blocks

You need a Processor to create Biofuel Blocks. The exact recipe requires:

  • 5x Fibrous Pulp — harvested from Cradle Shootroot or Whip Gorgon.
  • 3x Pent.
  • 2x Crab Feces.

Collect these in bulk and process them whenever your Bioreactor runs low. Keeping a dedicated Processor near your farm setup streamlines the whole chain.

Bioreactor power modes and capacity

The Bioreactor holds a maximum of 500 energy units and offers three modes:

  • Off — no fuel consumed, machine idle.
  • Normal — generates 10 power points, fuel burns at standard speed.
  • Overdrive — generates 20 power points but burns fuel at double the rate.

For steady base loads, Normal mode gets the job done. Flip to Overdrive only during temporary spikes when you need a burst of energy fast.

Unlocking and building the Bioreactor

You must scan three blueprint fragments on planet Proteus. They are scattered at these locations:

  • Chap’s Blackbox cave — 220 meters south of the Lifepod, inside a secret living compartment.
  • Volcanic Ocean Biome area — 390 meters east of the Lifepod, inside a large metal crate next to a coral dome.
  • Old Habitat POI — 380 meters north of the Lifepod, in the western wing of the ruins.

Once unlocked, use the Habitat Builder and find it under Interior Facilities and Power. Construction costs:

  • 2x Titanium Ingot (each needs 3x Titanium in a Processor).
  • 2x Copper Ingot (each needs 3x Copper in a Processor).

Place the Bioreactor only in the center of a Room structure.

Fuel supply chain and base layout

Raw Fibrous Pulp, Pent, or even small fish work as emergency fuel, but you want a renewable source of Biofuel Blocks. Set up Garden Plots or Interior Growbeds right next to your Bioreactor room.

Grow Cradle Shootroot or Whip Gorgon for Fibrous Pulp, and keep a Processor nearby to craft blocks on demand. That loop gives you infinite power without ever leaving your base.

The Bioreactor is the backbone of any self-sufficient base, and Biofuel Blocks are the most efficient way to keep it running. For oxygen management, material processing, and deep biome exploration, our Subnautica 2 hub at Solo Jugadores has you covered.
